Chapter 6

The revelation about my mother hit me like a sledgehammer. It wasn't something I had expected. My mind struggled to process the information. Valeria's voice cut through the haze, pulling me back to the present. “Walker…? Detective!” she said, her tone filled with urgency. I shook my head, trying to clear the cobwebs that clung to my thoughts and snapped out of my reverie.

“How do we find her?” I said.

"The Night Siren lives deep within the shadows of our paranormal underworld. In fact, I haven’t seen or heard of her since the day you were born, in 1966,” Valeria said. Damn! Obviously not a coincidence.

“No P.O. Box address, maybe a hotmail account?” I asked hopefully.

Valeria sighed, her expression tense. "No P.O. Box, Walker, no email. A master of disappearing, Drake's the queen of hide-and-seek. She's remained elusive, leaving us with nothing but whispers in the shadows."

“Whispers in the shadows,” I repeated - so Drake was a regular Houdini. Simile and humor aside I was still thinking, still deep in thought. “What was the other name she gave you?”

“Lucian Sparrow,” Valeria said. Sparrow, she explained, had acquired the key. They weren’t able to establish how. “It all happened very suddenly. We were only vaguely aware of Sparrow. Clarice had encountered him twice before. He was never a big name and we weren’t focused on him at all. We had no clue of his involvement. It seemed like one moment we knew of him, then he was our only focus and we rushed to find him. Every second counted. We used all our resources and finally located him here, in Paris. We cornered him and then he did the unthinkable - he opened the portal. We were almost too late, but Clarice, well, you’ve seen her, she’s fast. She got him, just in time and I mean only just."

"Where is Lucian now?" I asked. Valeria shook her head. I’d seen that look before in my line of work, it was a somber acknowledgment - Lucian was no longer among the living, so to speak, he was dead. “So we’re not going to be having any happy reunions?” I asked.

“Didn’t you notice my somber acknowledgment - Lucian is dead!” Valeria said.

Turned out that Clarice, the unsung heroine of that fateful night in 1966, had delivered a blow with enough force to make Lucian, clasping the key in his greedy hands, relinquish it. Fate had taken a grim turn — Lucian, stumbling backward as Clarice had turned the key to reseal the portal, had been cut in two by the closing gateway, a brutal and irreversible fate.

“More like a one-way ticket,” I noted as Valeria explained the fate of Lucian. I was deep in thought, turning over the pieces of the puzzle in my mind. My mom, Goethe, the Abysall Key, Clarice and Valeria - the Night Siren, Elara Drake, Lucian. All these names swirled around in my head connected by nothing more than thin, twisted strands of fate. I mentally arranged them, searching for a link that tied them all together.
